Heb je ook weleens afgevraagd wat DPI betekent en waarom het voor het afdrukken van foto’s zo belangrijk is? En is het van belang voor een foto die je alleen maar digitaal gaat gebruiken? En waar de resolutie in pixels aan moet voldoen? In dit blog de uitleg over een scherm”afdruk” versus een echte afdruk, een geprinte foto. 

 

Dots Per Inch (DPI) / Pixels Per Inch (PPI)

 

DPI (afkorting van dots per inch) is een oude Engelse drukkersterm voor de hoeveelheid puntjes (dots) op een drukraster (1 inch = 2,54 cm). Op foto’s in oude kranten kon je die puntjes letterlijk zien, terwijl de fotograaf foto’s zonder puntjes had aangeleverd. In de huidige kranten zijn de rasters zo fijn dat de afzonderlijke puntjes op een normale leesafstand niet meer te zien zijn, waardoor die foto’s een veel betere kwaliteit hebben.

 

In het digitale tijdperk zou dit beter Pixels per inch of zelfs Pixels per centimeter genoemd kunnen worden, alleen is de alom gebruikte term dots per inch (dpi).

 

De eigenschappen van je digitale foto’s kun je vinden in een fotobewerkingsprogramma, maar ook in de verkenner. Klik met de rechtermuisknop op het bestand en dan: Eigenschappen > Samenvatting > Geavanceerd. Of op de MAC via Voorvertoning (Extras > Toon Infovenster). Deze eigenschappen worden ook wel de EXIF-gegevens genoemd (kortweg EXIF).

 

 

Een fotobestand in een camera of (opgeslagen op) de computer heeft geen afmeting in inches of centimeters. Er wordt vaak gedacht dat het dpi-getal een eigenschap van een fotobestand is, maar zo’n bestand heeft alleen een onderverdeling, een resolutie, in pixels, bijvoorbeeld 3860 x 5782. En dus ook geen pixels per centimeter (of inch), dus geen ppi (of dpi).

 

Een foto op het beeldscherm heeft alleen een maat in pixels. Een beeldscherm is tegenwoordig meestal afgesteld op 1024 x 768 pixels, je (beeld)schermresolutie. Een foto op een beeldscherm of een website heeft geen dpi, geen 72 dpi (of 96 dpi), geen enkele dpi. Op een scherm van 72 dpi is de weergave van dat plaatje ook 72 dpi. Maar de foto zelf is niet 72 dpi, sterker nog zo’n plaatje heeft helemaal geen dpi, alleen pixels. Alleen bij veel fotobewerkingsprogrammas moet je bij exporteren een dpi/ppi neerzetten.

 

Pas als je gaat afdrukken, is er sprake van een bepaalde afmeting, uitgedrukt in inches of centimeters. En dan pas spreek je van dpi/ppi en de norm hiervoor is 300 dpi/ppi. Als je een foto gaat exporteren, uit je fotobewerkingsprogrammas, om af te drukken let erop dat de foto genoeg pixels heeft voor het formaat waarop je de foto wilt afdrukken en dat de dpi/ppi waarde op 300 staat. Dat laatste is wat een drukker eist.

 

Eigenlijk zou er geëist moeten worden dat foto’s aangeleverd worden met voldoende pixels, zodat deze afgedrukt kunnen worden op minimaal 300 dpi/ppi (of 118 dots per cm, want dat is dots per inch omgerekend).

 

 

Kortom
De resolutie van een foto wordt uitgedrukt in pixels (b x h).
De resolutie van een afdruk wordt uitgedrukt in dpi/ppi. Maar belangrijker is dus nog het volgende: hou in de gaten dat de foto de juiste aantal pixels moet hebben voor het gewenste afdrukformaat!!

 

 

Vuistregel

 

Een afgedrukte foto moet (meestal) 300 dpi zijn, dat betekent 300 px/inch (pixels per inch). Dat is hetzelfde als 118px/centimeter. Als een drukker zegt dat je je foto’s moet aanleveren op 300 dpi, dan bedoelt deze: je foto moet voldoende pixels hebben. Als je de afdrukmaat weet, moet je het aantal cm vermenigvuldigen met 118. Dat is het aantal pixels dat je foto minimaal moet hebben (afronden kan geen kwaad).

 

The basis rekenformule is dan met een DPI/PPI van 300: breedte in cm x 118; hoogte in cm x 118 = aantal benodigde pixels.

 

Rekenvoorbeeld: Als je een afbeelding 10cm x 15cm wilt afdrukken met een DPI/PPI van 300 dan zou je 10 moeten vermenigvuldigen met 118 (pixels per centimeter) en vervolgens 15 moeten vermenigvuldigen met 118 (px/cm). Je foto van 10x15cm heeft 1180 x 1770 aan pixels nodig om een goede kwaliteit foto te zijn.

• deel pixels door centimeters, is dit kleiner dan 118, dan moet een programma zal photoshop nieuwe gaan berekenen (resample – niet aan te raden).

What is DPI? Why do you need it?

 

Have you ever wondered what DPI stands for and why it is so important for printed photographs? And is it important for a picture that you are just going to use digitally? In this blog, the explanation of a screen “print” versus a real print, a printed photo. 

 

Dots Per Inch (DPI) / Pixels Per Inch (PPI)

 

DPI (an abbreviation of “dots per inch”) is an old English printers term for the density of the dots (“dots”) to a printing screen (1 inch = 2.54 cm). You could literally see the dots of photos in old newspapers, while the photographer had supplied photos without dots. In today’s newspapers the grids are so fine that the individual dots are no longer visible in a normal reading distance. The photos have a much better quality.

 

In the digital age this should probably be called Pixels per inch or Pixels per centimeter, only the widely used term is dots per inch (dpi).

 

The properties of your digital photos can be found in a photo editing program, but also in the explorer. Right-click on the file and then: Properties> Summary> Advanced. Or MAC via Preview (Extras> Show Info). These properties are called the EXIF data (in short EXIF).

 

An image file in a camera or (stored on) the computer has no size in inches or centimeters. It is often thought that the dpi number is a property of the image file, but such a file only has a subdivision, a resolution in pixels, for example 3860×5782. And therefore no pixels per inch (or inches), so no ppi (or dpi).

 

An image on the screen is only a ‘size’ in pixels. A display nowadays is usually set at 1024 x 768 pixels (your screen resolution or screen resolution). A photo on a screen or a website has no dpi, not 72 dpi (or 96 dpi), no dpi what so ever. On a screen of 72 dpi, it shows the picture in 72 dpi. But the picture itself is not 72 dpi, indeed such a picture has no dpi at all, only pixels. Although in many photo editing programs you have to export giving the image a dpi / ppi.

 

Only when you have a photo printed, there is a certain size, expressed in inches or centimeters. And then you speak of dpi / ppi and the standard for this is an image with 300 dpi / ppi. When you export an image from your photo editing program to have it printed, make sure the picture has enough pixels for the size you want to print the photo in, and that the dpi / ppi value is 300. The latter is what a printer/printshop demands.

 

It should actually be required that photographers deliver photos with enough pixels so that it can be printed with at least 300 dpi / ppi.

 

 

In short
The resolution of an image is measured in pixels (width x height).
The resolution of a print is expressed in dpi / ppi. But more important still is the following: keep in mind that the photo has the correct number of pixels for the desired print size !!

 

 

Rule of thumb

 

A printed photograph must (mostly) be 300 dpi, which means 300 px / inch (pixels per inch). If a printer says you must deliver your photos at 300 dpi, than he means: your picture should have enough pixels.

 

The basic equation for calculating is: DPI/PPI = width(pixels) / width of image (inches); DPI/PPI = height(pixels) / height of image (inches).

 

Calculating example: If you want to print a 4-inch-by-6-inch image, and your pixel count is 1200 x 1800, you need to divide 1200 (the pixel height) by 4 (the photo height) and then divide 1800 (the pixel width) by 6 (the photo width). The DPI/PPI will be 300, providing you with good quality photos. However, if you want to print a larger photo, for example 8-inch-by-10-inch photo, the DPI/PPI reduces to 150 for width and 180 for height, giving you lower quality prints

• divide pixels by inches, is the outcome greater than or exactly 300, you have a good print.
• divide pixels by inches, is the outcome smaller than 300, you have to add pixels (resample – not advisable).
• divide pixels by 300, and you will have the maximum printsize in inches.
